Can vinegar kill head lice?

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, a vinegar-water solution, although not scientifically validated, may help loosen and remove nits, which are the eggs of lice. However, this method does not kill head lice.
The MDH states that using various over-the-counter products, such as specialized shampoos and creams that contain insecticides, is the best way to eliminate head lice. To prevent a second wave of lice from thriving, a secondary round of treatment about a week later is recommended to kill any newly hatched insects. Following each round of treatment, a specialized louse comb should be used in order to pick any remaining lice and nits.
