South Carolina currently does not allow early voting. However, voters with a legitimate excuse can choose cast an in person absentee ballot. Physical disability and vacationing on election day are two of the many valid reasons a person can cast an absentee ballot.
Early voting has picked up steam in South Carolina in the past few years, with a bill supporting early voting passing the house in 2013. The bill's supporters complained voters in Richland County had to wait six hours to cast a vote in a recent election. The bill's detractors cite that having, "no excuse," early voting would cut down the one-month period for voters to cast an absentee ballot, eliminating them from the voting process.
