How can wood paneling be prepped to paint?

To prep wood paneling for painting, it should be cleaned and sanded, and any grooves in the paneling should be filled in. Then prime and paint the paneling with an interior latex paint.

Wash the wood paneling with a mixture of mild detergent and water to remove any dirt and oil. When the paneling is completely dry, use 220-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the wood. Wood paneling often has grooves in the wood that must be filled to give the paneling a more uniform look before painting it. Fill in all of the grooves with spackling or dry wall compound. Allow the compound to dry completely, then sand each spot smooth, or leave the spots as-is to add texture to the wall. Wipe the dust from the walls with a damp cloth when the sanding is completed.

Prime the paneling using a stain-blocking primer, and allow the primer to dry completely for at least 24 hours. After the primer has dried completely, paint a coat of interior latex paint onto the wood paneling. Allow the latex paint to dry completely before adding a second coat. Interior latex paint that has a satin finish is more durable and can be washed easily.
