Where is Cancun?

Cancun is a Mexican resort city located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the eastern-most part of Mexico. The city is near the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Cancun and the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula were home to roughly 450,000 Mayans when Spanish explorers first arrived to the area in the early 16th century. However, diseases from the European explorers wiped out most of the Mayan population. Throughout the history of Mexico, Cancun was relatively obscure, until the 1970s when the Mexican government built beach-front hotels. This boom in construction eventually turned Cancun into a popular tourist destination.
