Canned tuna, like all canned meats that are not kept in a refrigerator before being opened, are considered non-perishable items. Despite having a use-by date, if the can does not show signs of denting, rusting, leaking or bulging, the tuna is generally safe to eat.
As of 2014, all canned foods are considered to have an unlimited shelf life by the FDA Although not required, manufacturers include use-by dates to indicate until what time a product is considered to be at its peak quality. Discard any cans if they have been exposed to freezing temperatures or temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
