Is a Cape buffalo dangerous?

The Cape buffalo, also known as the African buffalo, is dangerous. It is reported to cause roughly 200 deaths per year, the most of any African animal. It is a large and powerful animal that does not back down even if wounded by hunters.

Cape buffalo are between 40 and 67 inches at the shoulder, weigh between 1000 and 2000 pounds and possess large horns. They are capable of charging at speeds up to 31 miles per hour when angered. They have excellent camouflage despite their large size, and they are notorious for circling back on human hunters after being wounded and ambushing them, rather than fleeing. Old bulls have been claimed to deliberately stalk and attack humans, but these may be reports of wounded animals.
