Cape Verde is an independent island country comprised of 10 islands; it is part of the continent of Africa. Cape Verde is located approximately 350 miles off the coast of Western Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Verde comprises a total area of 1,557 square miles.

The neighboring countries to Cape Verde include The Gambia, Mauritania and Senegal. Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde, and it contains the national capital, Praia. The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese. Cape Verde became independent from Portugal in 1975, and Cape Verde was completely uninhabited until European settlers discovered the area in 1456.
