The capital of Egypt is the northeastern city of Cairo. With an estimated 2013 population of more than 7 million, the African city is the largest in the Middle East and second-largest on the continent to Lagos, Nigeria. The metropolitan population ranks as the 16th largest in the world.
Cairo is situated near the Nile River and roughly 100 miles from the Mediterranean Sea and 75 miles from the Suez Canal. Considered the cultural center of the country, areas near the city feature some of the most famous remnants of ancient Egypt. Cairo is responsible for roughly two-thirds of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), primarily in textiles, cotton and food processing.
