A cardiac prudent diet is a strict, heart-healthy diet rich with fruits, vegetables, fiber, lean protein and legumes. A cardiac prudent diet, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, can help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in men and result in a reduced risk of coronary artery disease and colon cancer in women, as reported by Harvard Health Publications.
A cardiac prudent diet limits intake of sugar-laden foods and beverages, high-sodium foods and alcohol as well as red meat and foods high in saturated fat. It encourages an abundance of fresh produce, beans, healthy oils like olive and canola, fish, nuts, seeds and whole grains, according to The American Heart Association.
