How do you care for carnations?

To properly care for carnations, provide the plant with full sunlight and ample space to grow. Surround the plant's bedding area with organic materials, while watering the roots sufficiently every week. To achieve this task you need only access to sunlight and water, an organic fertilizer and scissors for trimming.
- Provide full sunlight
Carnations prefer full sunlight. However, if growing the plants in an extremely hot climate, it may be necessary to provide partial shade.
- Supply ample space for growing
In order to give the plants proper circulation, keep 10 to 12 inches of space between each plant.
- Provide organic plant material
Spread plant material, such as shredded leaves or dry grass, near the carnations without actually touching them. This helps to keep the soil moist and temperate, while also helping to prevent weeds.
- Water sufficiently
Carnations should receive 1 inch of water every week, whether through watering or rain. To prevent fungal spots on the leaves, water the roots instead of the foliage.
- Support tall carnations
Tall carnations may not be able to support the weight of their heads. Gently tie them to a stake for support.
- Fertilize every six to eight weeks
Use a water-soluble fertilizer with a ratio of 5-10-10 or less.
- Remove old flowers
Encourage repeating blooms by removing wilted flowers. Make a cut just below the wilted bloom on the stem.
- Cut the plant back seasonally
After winter kills the plant above the ground, cut it back to 1 or 2 inches above the crown.
