Care for a hardwood floor by sweeping and vacuuming it regularly, cleaning it with a mop, using the right cleaners and using floor mats at high traffic areas. You need a broom, vacuum, mop, cleaners and mats.

1. Sweep the floor

   Sweep the floor regularly to keep it clean and remove dust and grit than can scratch the hardwood.

2. Vacuum the floor

   Use a vacuum without a beater bar to suck up all the dust between the floor boards.

3. Mop the floor

   Mop the floor with a soft, terrycloth head to keep from scratching or damaging the hardwood. Use only a little water while mopping. Too much water can seep into the cracks and pores of the wood and ruin the floor.

4. Use the right cleaning products

   Only use cleaning products that are recommended for cleaning hardwood floors by hardwood flooring manufacturers. Avoid ammonia cleaners, oil-based soaps and wax.

5. Clean spills immediately

   Clean up water or liquid spills immediately to prevent water damage to the floor boards.

6. Use mats

   Place mats on the hardwood floor by doors and high traffic areas to catch dirt and prevent it from scratching the floor. Place covers or protectors on furniture legs to prevent scuffing.
