Who carved Mount Rushmore?

Gutzon Borglum oversaw the carving of Mount Rushmore. In total, over 400 people contributed to the project, which began in 1927 and took 14 years to finish.

The carving of the faces of Presidents Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt required the extraction of about 450,000 tons of rock. Each president's head measures roughly 60 feet tall. Borglum's initial plan called for the presidents to be carved from the head to the waist, but there was not enough money available to make that possible. Mount Rushmore was named after an attorney, Charles Rushmore, who inspected mining claims in the area. Mount Rushmore is situated in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota.
