The American sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed and oversaw the project that became Mount Rushmore. It took approximately 400 people working in dangerous conditions to carry out the project. It also required the removal of 450,000 tons of rock.
The project lasted from 1927 to 1941. The head of Washington was the first to be dedicated on July 4, 1930. In 1941, Borglum died and left his son Lincoln to complete Mount Rushmore. The site draws over 2 million viewers each year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Mount Rushmore is also known as "The Shrine to Democracy."
