What does a cat footprint look like?

A footprint belonging to a domestic cat is characterized by the imprint of four oval-shaped toes and an absence of claw markings. The two front toes are also not evenly aligned. A cat's claws fail to register in prints because the cat keeps them sheathed when walking.
The soft pads on each foot of a cat allow it to move more quietly, aiding in the stealth and ambush techniques the cat uses on prey. Cats sometimes leave a hind footprint over a front one due to their natural walking motion, which also assists in stealth. A cat uses its claws to leave territorial markings, capture prey, climb surfaces and to defend itself.
