Does cat litter absorb oil?

Cat litter absorbs oil and other types of liquid spills in a manner similar to a sponge drawing in water. Kitty litter granules contain absorbent clay called bentonite. Some types of kitty litter also contain items such as wheat, paper, corn and other natural materials.
Cat litter sprinkled over a fresh oil spill contains the oil instantly and prevents the spill from growing. The oil spill smears if wiped up with paper or cloth towels and instead should be swept up in about an hour.
Cat litter also works to absorb moisture making the growth of mold and mildew less likely in damp areas. After sprinkling cat litter in an area prone to dampness, it can be swept up or vacuumed as necessary.
