Why do cats always land on their feet?

Cats land on their feet after a fall due to their reflexes and instincts. As a cat is falling, it is able to sense which way its body should face and correct its position. The cat then arches its back and positions its arms and legs under its body.
According to Animal Planet, the flexible spine of the cat allows it to contort in mid-air. Although a cat is usually able to land on its feet, serious injures can still occur if the force of impact is too great. Older cats are more vulnerable to suffering broken bones and even death. While a high fall can generate more impact, it also gives the cat more time to correct its landing.
