What are some caulking techniques?

Caulking techniques include using a utility knife to remove existing caulk and pushing or pulling the caulking gun or tube so that the tip stays in motion and leaves an even bead. Another caulking technique is to apply long beads in shorter sections so that the process is manageable.

Use your index finger or an ice cube to tool water-based caulk. For tooling silicone and polyurethane, use a caulk tool or a plastic spoon. Apply a solvent to the surfaces of sticky caulk materials such as poly caulk.

Cut the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle and ensure the opening is smaller than the bead you will apply. Insert backer rods into cracks in the caulk that run deeper than 1/2 inch.
