What causes bones to ache?

According to the National Institutes of Health, some causes of aching or painful bones include bone cancer or another cancer that has spread to the bones, a disruption of the blood supply (such as sickle cell anemia), an infection, leukemia or osteoporosis (a loss of bone mineralization). Aching bones may also be symptomatic of an injury or overuse.
Particularly when bone pain has no identifiable cause, such as trauma or overuse, it is important to consult a medical professional. Any bone pain can be indicative of serious problems.
Having established the cause and location of bone pain, a medical professional may prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, hormones or painkillers.
