Corneal edema, or water retention and swelling in the eye, is caused by various medical disorders and even simple viral infections. This medical condition can also result from eye surgeries, particularly cataract surgeries with complications.
One key cause of corneal edema is Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy, which is a disorder causing degeneration of the cornea and continued fluid buildup in the eye. Other causes of corneal edema are eye trauma and excessive use of some contact varieties.
The primary symptoms of corneal edema include blurred vision, halos around lights and sensitivity to light. As the condition worsens, individuals may experience eye pain or the feeling of something being in the eye.
