What causes diabetes?

According to the New York State Department of Health, type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different causes. Type 1 diabetes doesn't have a clear cause, but genetics and environmental factors may play a part in the disease. Type 2 diabetes may be caused by genetics and lifestyle factors.

The New York State Department of Health states that type 1 diabetes is a disease in which the body can no longer produce insulin because the immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells. Type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1, and it occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes may also occur if the body cannot use insulin properly.
