According to HealthGrades, there are various causes of an elevated pulse, including emotional factors, exercise or physical exertion and medical conditions. Common indicators of an elevated heart rate are pounding heart rate, dizziness, shortness of breath and chest pain.
If an elevated heart rate persists, HealthGrades recommends a medical evaluation at an emergency room. Physicians at an emergency room use a variety of tests to diagnose the reason for an elevated heart rate. A few recommendations to avoid an elevated heart rate are to exercise frequently, maintain a healthy weight, manage stress, limit caffeine consumption, limit intake of sugars and quit smoking.
