What causes small blisters on the eyelids?

Small blisters on the eyelids can be caused by a herpes virus, according to the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. The symptoms include a rash with small blisters that crust over within a week.
Herpes eye disease affects all ages and usually there are not many long-term effects. However, in severe cases, the blisters can cause scarring on the cornea, which can cause vision issues.
A sty can also cause a blister-like bump on the eyelid, states Mayo Clinic. Symptoms include a reddish lump on the eyelid, pain, swelling and crusting around the eye. This condition often clears up on its own.
