Stabbing knee pain can indicate a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis, tendinitis, gout or bursitis, states Healthline. Other possible conditions include torn ligaments, bone tumors, dislocation or rheumatoid arthritis.
Chronic knee pain normally does not go away without medical treatment of the underlying condition, explains Healthline. Knee pain may be accompanied by swelling or pain when the knee is touched. While some chronic knee pain feels sharp and stabbing, a constant ache or dull burning sensation are also common sensations. Infections, overuse of the knee and bad posture can make chronic knee pain worse. Age, injuries or trauma, and athletic activity increase risk for chronic knee pain.
