Ankle swelling can be caused by pregnancy complications, lymphedema, venous insufficiency, a medication side effect or kidney disease, among many other possible factors. An injury such as an ankle sprain can also cause swelling to the ankle.

Fluid accumulation in the foot and ankle is called peripheral edema. The fluid accumulates in the feet and ankles due to gravity. Although peripheral edema is fairly common in older adults, it may be a sign of a serious health problem, according to Healthline. More benign, and common, causes of peripheral edema include being overweight, standing for long periods of time and a medication side effect.
