Type 1 diabetes patients cannot produce insulin naturally, so they are more likely to suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis, explains WebMD. The condition can also be caused by skipping a meal, illness and stress responses.

If blood sugar is high check for keytones using a urine strip, notes WebMD. If keytones are present, the patient must try to lower their blood sugar and check again. If that doesn’t work, a physician should be consulted immediately.
