Is CCl4 soluble in water?
By Forinfos - 09/12/2025 - 0 comments
CCl4, called carbon tetrachloride, does not react with water and is therefore not soluble in it. When added to water, the carbon tetrachloride, which is denser than water, sinks to the bottom to form a layer separate from the water.
Carbon tetrachloride does not react with water because the carbon atom is surrounded by four larger chlorine atoms which prevent the oxygen atoms from reaching the carbon. If the carbon were a larger atom, such as silicon or lead, the oxygen atoms would attach to the center atom while the hydrogen atoms would be able to break off and attach to the chlorine atoms, allowing for solubility.
