KCl, potassium chloride, is a compound made up of the alkali metal potassium and chlorine, and it is soluble in water. In an aqueous solution, KCl separates into K+ and Cl- ions.
The alkali metals are the elements in Group 1A of the periodic table, and all compounds made of alkali metals are soluble.
Pure KCl is odorless, but the compound has a salt-like taste when dissolved in water. Potassium chloride is used for food processing and has medical and scientific applications. It can be extracted from ores such as potash and carnallite. When found as a pure mineral, KCl is known as sylvite.
