Is butane soluble in water?
By Forinfos - 03/11/2025 - 0 comments
Butane is virtually insoluble in water and has a solubility of 61 milligrams per liter at 20 degrees Celsius. However, the solubility of butane in water can be considerably increased by decreasing the temperature of the water.
Butane, like other alkanes, is almost completely insoluble in water and other polar solvents. This is because butane is nonpolar; the hydrogen bonds that help water dissolve ionic compounds, such as salts, are unable to act on butane's nonpolar bonds.
In comparison, sodium chloride has a solubility of 359 grams per liter at 20 degrees Celsius, a solubility several thousand times greater than that of butane.
