Is a cellphone number public?

There is no directory that currently lists cellphone numbers. There were rumors that a cellphone directory was being created.

An Internet hoax was circulating that a directory was being issued and cellphone numbers would be made public record. While there were companies looking into creating this directory, the numbers would be added only with the owner's consent. Many people feared that telemarketers would be able to retrieve their cellphone number. As with any phone, cellphones can be placed on the National Do Not Call registry. The number will remain on the Do Not Call list until the cellphone user calls to opt out of the service.
