What does the Celtic cross symbolize?

A common myth associated with the Celtic cross is that it symbolizes a combination of the cross of the crucifixion with the sun. Legend has it that St. Patrick introduced the Celtic cross as a tool to convert the pagans of Ireland to Christianity.
According to the legend, St. Patrick combined the cross with the sun to link the cross with the all-important pagan symbol of the sun. The sun is seen by the pagans of Ireland as life-giving. Similarly, Christ is said to have died to give eternal life to people. Although St. Patrick is said to have made use of the Celtic cross for these purposes, the general design of the Celtic cross dates back to around 5000 B.C.
