What are CFCs?

CFCs, also known as chlorofluorocarbons, are compounds that are most commonly used as refrigerants, propellants and solvents. Best known as "Freon," CFCs have been discontinued as the main source of coolant in air conditioners and refrigerators because of their ability to deplete the ozone layer in the atmosphere.

CFCs have also been found to be harmful to an individual's health. These compounds enter the body through inhalation or from drinking contaminated water. As a result, CFCs can affect the normal function of the heart, kidneys and other major organs. Symptoms of exposure include tingling in the extremities, nausea, skin irritation and even slurred speech.
