How do you change the timing belt on a Honda?

In order to repair a timing belt on a Honda engine, the valve cover, timing belt cover and several mechanical components have to be removed. Depending on the engine, some coolant hoses may have to be drained so they can be removed. After its replacement, the timing belt will also need to be adjusted to the ignition of the engine.

There are several different types of Honda engines and the large ones have different approaches to replacing the timing belt. However, they follow similar steps.

1. Remove the spark plugs and disconnect the battery

First disconnect the negative battery cable, then loosen and remove each spark plug from the engine.

2. Drain the coolant

Place a pan underneath the engine and drain the coolant.

3. Remove the valve and timing belt covers

Loosen each 10mm bolt and remove the covers.

4. Remove the power steering pump

Loosen the power steering mounting bolts and remove the pump from the engine.

5. Remove the A/C belt and pulley

The A/C belt and pulley will be mounted in from of the timing belt. Loosen the tensioner and remove the A/C belt. Then, loosen and remove the A/C belt pulley.

6. Remove the cruise control unit and alternator belt

Loosen the alternator tensioner and remove the belt. Then remove the cruise control unit.

7. Remove the starter and crank pulley

Loosen and remove the two bolts holding the starter in place. With the help of a breaker bar, break the crank pulley bolt loose and remove the assembly.

8. Remove the water pump

Although optional, it is highly recommended to replace the water pump as well. Remove the old water pump.

9. Replace the belt

Set the camshafts to top-dead-center and install the new belt.

10. Re-install the removed components

Install all the previously removed components and double-check the timing the ensure it is set in the correct position.
