A defining characteristic of a myth is that it attempts to explain why a natural phenomena occurs or why something is a certain way. Myths often involve powerful beings, gods or supernatural figures who are the cause of an event. Greek mythology stories are well-known myths used by the ancient Greeks to explain why and how the world came about.
Many myths are closely linked to religious groups, and some view myths to be true accounts of the past. Creation myths are found in nearly every culture and religion to explain how the Earth was formed. Even though the myth may contradict scientific knowledge, it is held as cannon by many of the sect's members.
