How do you charge a PlayStation 3 controller?

When the Sony PlayStation 3 is on, use the USB cable that was provided with the system and controller to plug the controller into the system. A red light on the controller will flash when it begins to charge and stop flashing when charging is complete. After the controller is completely charged, it can be used for either wired or wireless play.

When the power indicator on the PlayStation 3 is green, this means that the console is powered on and ready to charge the controller. When the console is setting on the floor, the USB end of the cable will plug into PlayStation 3 underneath and to the left of the disk drive.
