What is a chayote squash?

Chayote squash, also referred to as vegetable pear or chcocho, is a bland vegetable native to Mexico. Chayote is availabie in prickly and smooth varieties.
Culinary use of chayote includes serving it raw in a salad or serving it stuffed and baked. It can be mashed, pickled or fried, though it is most often boiled. Because chayote is a bland vegetable, a lot of seasoning is typically used to make it tastier. The leaves of the chayote are sometimes made into a tea, and some believe this tea may help those suffering from kidney stones, arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure.
