What is chazeret?

On a Passover seder plate, chazeret is one of the two bitter herbs meant to symbolize the bitter harshness of slavery, which Jewish people experienced in Egypt prior to their escape. Passover's main focus is a remembrance of this escape, and the bitter herbs are part of the heavy symbolism of the food that is consumed at this event.

Depending on the specific ethnic traditions of the person or family hosting the seder, the bitter herbs, which are referred to as both chazeret and maror, may consist of foods such as romaine lettuce, horseradish leaf, dandelion leaf, curly parsley, endive leaf, celery leaf or the green part of a scallion.
