Is cheese good for dogs?

Small to moderate quantities of cheese is a safe treat to give a dog to eat, and is a good source of protein, calcium and vitamins A and B. Additionally, low-fat cottage cheese is recommended for dogs that are prone to diarrhea, or are recovering from illness.

A small percentage of dogs are lactose intolerant, and dairy products can cause temporary digestive problems. When feeding a dog any dairy product, it is best to determine the level of the dog's dairy tolerance by initially offering it small portions. If the dog becomes ill, discontinue offering it any dairy product, or offer a lactose-free alternative.
