According to the American Cancer Society, "chemo brain" refers to a mental fog that cancer patients experience before, during and after chemotherapy treatment. The duration of chemo brain is different for each patient.
The most common symptoms of chemo brain are memory lapses, trouble concentrating, trouble remembering details, trouble multi-tasking, taking longer to finish things and trouble remembering common words. The majority of cancer patients suffer from chemo brain only a short time, however a minority group suffer long-term mental changes. According to the ACS, the causes of brain changes during chemotherapy are attributed to the cancer itself, steroids used for the treatment, low blood counts, sleep problems, infection, fatigue, hormone changes, nutritional deficiencies, patient age, depression and stress.
