Some symbols used by Cherokee warriors include a bloody hand to indicate someone wounded or killed and a left-pointing arrow beneath a right-pointing arrow to represent war. Other symbols include two crossed arrows to represent friendship and a short, broken arrow to represent peace.

Another symbol for peace is known as the Four Winds and is depicted by a cross with its tips bent in a counter clockwise direction resembling a swastika. Like many Native American tribes, Cherokee warriors used the sign of the thunderbird to represent a good omen. They also used the rattlesnake jaw, resembling a frown with teeth, as a symbol for strength and a series of three consecutive tepees, or triangles, to indicate an enemy encampment.
