Cherry juice can help treat gout if the cherries are tart, notes Dr. Andrew Weil. Studies from Michigan State University found that when patients ate 20 tart cherries, problem enzymes were inhibited just as they were when anti-inflammatory drugs were taken.
A study in Boston University showed that eating 10 tart cherries a day helped prevent people who had already had gout from additional attacks. However, doctors recommend that medication be used in addition to eating cherries for gout treatment, notes Dr. Andrew Weil. Medications will be an nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), a colchichine drug or a cortiscosteroid drug, depending on the patient's condition and history.
