What is China's motto?

As of 2014, China does not have an official motto. According to the Rand Corporation, Chinese scholars and officials are considering the statement "China's peaceful rise" as a possible motto in the near term. The phrase acknowledges former problems with rising Chinese power and the desire to avoid those pitfalls.

In 2003, former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao voiced the phrase "China's peaceful rise" during a speech to Harvard University students. The statement is intended to show that China values regional and global stability as the country's power and influence expands. This is a departure from past mottos, which were used by the Chinese Communist Party as propaganda.
