What are chives?

Chives are an herb in the lily family that are related to onions. The leaves are long and slim. Chives have a mild onion flavor and are excellent in soups, salads, or when used as a garnish.
Chives grow in 10 to 12-inch tall clumps and bear pink flowers. The flowers are edible and make pretty garnishes. Grow the plant indoors or out.
Harvest them by snipping off a few leaves with kitchen scissors. Chop them and sprinkle them over dishes. They go well with potatoes or recipes featuring sour cream. Chives are best used fresh but can also be frozen.
