Chlorella algae is a single-celled type of algae belonging to the larger category of Chlorophyta. It is typically used as a dietary supplement to provide numerous vitamins and other nutrients.

Chlorella naturally grows in freshwater environments and also in controlled environments to allow for easier harvesting. It contains a large variety of nutrients such as proteins and amino acids as well as a high number of essential minerals.

Claims of numerous health benefits from using chlorella as a supplement have commonly been made, such as lowering cholesterol, helping prevent or reduce the effects of cancer and boosting the immune system. These claims are not supported by scientific evidence, however, and should be viewed with discretion.
