High levels of HDL cholesterol has positive effects such as reducing the risk of heart disease, according to WebMD. HDL cholesterol works by removing LDL, -known as 'bad' cholesterol- from the body.

Cholesterol is an essential fat composed of both HDL and LDL cholesterol. Healthy cholesterol levels are attained by reducing levels of LDL cholesterol while increasing levels of HDL cholesterol, explains Web MD.

HDL cholesterol levels can be increased by smoking cessation, weight loss, engaging in more physical exercise and by choosing healthier fats, as stated by Mayo Clinic. Optimal HDL cholesterol levels are those greater than 60 mg/dL.
