Chromium(III) iodide is a compound with the molecular formula CrI3. It is a black solid at room temperature and is used to make other chromium compounds.
When two chromium molecules and three diatomic iodine molecules react at 500 degrees Celsius, they make direct contact to form chromium(III) iodide. At room temperature, the compound is stable, but if the temperature rises to 200 degrees Celsius, the compound reacts with oxygen and releases iodine. The compound has a molar mass of 432.7 grams per mole and a density of 5.32 grams per cubic centimeter. Alternative names are chromium triiodide and chromic iodide.
