According to EMC Medicine Guides, ciprofloxacin 500 milligrams is used for treating bacterial infections, corneal ulcers and eye infections. The drug is also referred to as ciprofloxacin hydrochloride.
MedlinePlus explains that ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic and is sometimes used to treat anthrax. Since the drug is an antibiotic, it is not effective in treating colds, flu or any other viral infections.
Developing tendinitis can be a side effect with ciprofloxacin, warns MedlinePlus. Those who are over the age of 60 are at the highest risk of developing tendinitis or a tendon rupture. Ciprofloxacin use should be discontinued if such side effects are experienced.
