Ciprofloxacin is a drug in the quinolone class of antibiotics and works by stopping bacterial growth, according to WebMD. It is commonly used to treat or prevent anthrax, reports MedlinePlus.
Ciprofloxacin can be ingested via tablet, liquid suspension or extended-release tablet, as stated by MedlinePlus. Common side effects are dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, headache and trouble sleeping. More serious side effects include swelling of the tendons, skin sensitivity, unusual bleeding or bruising, changes in amount or color of urine, and liver problems. Side effects needing immediate medical attention include seizures, anxiety, fainting, irregular heartbeat, vision changes and tremors, according to WebMD.
