Where is the official Texas state prison?

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice operates over 40 prisons throughout state, including prisons in Huntsville, Dayton and Amarillo. This excludes privately run prisons and state jails funded by the state, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Other state prisons include Vance Prison in Richmond, Powledge Prison in Palestine, Luther Prison in Navasota and Coffield Prison in Tennessee Colony. Five of the prisons house female inmates, including Murray Prison in Gatesville and Hobby Prison in Marlin, notes the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In addition to prisons and jails, the Department operates special purpose facilities such as medical, psychiatric and transfer facilities.
