What is the Texas state mammal?

Texas has three designated state mammals. The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is the state small mammal, the Texas longhorn steer is the state large mammal and the Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is the state flying mammal.

The armadillo was declared state mammal in 1927, and both the longhorn steer and the Mexican free-tailed bat were declared state mammals in 1995. The 74th state legislature resolved the longstanding debate about whether the armadillo or the longhorn should symbolize Texas with the resolution that they would both be designated state mammals, which was signed into law by then-Governor George W. Bush in 1995.
