Texas has seven official state animals, including the mockingbird, armadillo and monarch butterfly. The other state animals of Texas are the Texas longhorn, free-tailed bat, Texas horned lizard and Guadalupe bass.
The mockingbird is the state bird of Texas. The state legislature recognizes it for appearing in all areas of the state year-round; the legislature also points to the mockingbird's instinct to protect its home as an example for Texans. Officially, Texas' state small mammal is the nine-banded armadillo, the only species of armadillo that lives in North America. The state insect of Texas is the monarch butterfly, which flies over the state during its mass migrations in the fall and spring.
